Every product goes through seasonal demands of high use time versus low use periods. Heating fuels are no different. They obviously have a higher usage in the fall and winter seasons.

Summer is the "off season" for heating products. During the summer months, less product is sold and inventory builds. Because of the low demand and inventory build-up, this period is often referred to as "summer fill" time.

Summer fill offers many benefits to the heating customers:

  1. Best price. Because demand is low and suppliers are building inventories, the summer fill period usually offers the best buying price of the year.
  2. Preparedness. The fall harvest season brings demand for both product and transportation equipment. Therefore, a heating customer who fills the supply tank during summer fill is assured of having plenty of fuel during the fall harvest season when temperatures normally cool.
  3. Less risk. The home or business owner who has the heating supply tank filled in the summer avoids being forced with making a purchase during high demand time. For example, on rare occasions, a heavy demand during harvest has brought product allocation. This means there is such a large demand for product that the supply of heating products and transportation equipment is maximized, albeit, for a short period of time.

As you can see, it is a prudent decision to "summer fill" heating fuel tanks in the summer in order to avoid the high demand time that occurs during the fall season. As mentioned, buying heating products during the summer usually offers the lowest price of the year and assures enough supply to get you beyond the harvest demand.
